When Repair Stops Making Sense
We will say when a repair is the better buy, even though the replacement is the bigger ticket for us. Three things decide it.
Age
Under about ten years old, a system usually has enough life left to be worth fixing. Past fifteen, most repairs are buying you months rather than years.
Refrigerant
R-22 was phased out and the price reflects that. A leak on an older R-22 system can cost more to recharge than the repair itself is worth, and it will leak again.
The repair against a new system
Once a single repair reaches a meaningful share of a replacement, you are paying most of the price of new for none of the warranty and none of the efficiency.
What a Replacement Actually Costs
Three things move the number, and only one of them is the unit itself.
The size your home actually needs
Which comes out of a load calculation, not the label on the old unit. Oversizing is expensive twice, once at purchase and again every month in a house that runs cold and clammy because the system never runs long enough to pull humidity.
The efficiency tier
Higher SEER costs more up front and less every month. Whether it pays back depends on how long you are staying in the house, and we will do that math with you rather than around you.
The condition of the ductwork
A new system pushing air through leaking ducts delivers a fraction of what you bought. Sometimes the ducts are fine. Sometimes they are the reason the old system struggled and nobody checked.
Replacing the AC and Furnace Together
When both sides of the system are the same age, replacing them together usually costs less than doing it twice and it keeps the equipment matched.
A mismatched system, a new high efficiency condenser paired with an old air handler, rarely delivers the rated efficiency, and in some cases it voids the manufacturer coverage on the new half. We will tell you when it matters and when it does not.
Should You Consider a Heat Pump?
Worth asking on a Gulf Coast replacement. A heat pump does the cooling you already need and covers the heating you use for a few weeks a year, which can mean one system instead of two.
It does not suit every house or every budget, and we are not going to steer you into one for the sake of it. But if nobody has raised it, they have skipped a real option.
How Long a New System Should Last
In this climate, expect a well maintained system to run a solid stretch before it starts costing you, and a neglected one to fall short of that. Our summers are long and systems here work more hours a year than the same equipment would further north.
Two things stretch it. Correct sizing, because an oversized system short cycles itself to an early death, and annual maintenance, because a system running low on charge through a dirty coil wears faster at every point.
Signs You Are Getting Close
Replacement rarely arrives without warning. These are the usual signals, and seeing two or three together is the point to start planning rather than waiting.
The repairs are stacking up
One repair is a repair. Three in two summers is a system telling you something.
The power bill keeps climbing
Same house, same habits, higher bill. Efficiency falls off as a system wears.
It runs constantly and still will not hold temperature
Especially in the afternoon. The system is at its limit.
It runs on R-22
Any significant leak on R-22 is an expensive conversation, and it will leak again.
Rooms that used to be fine no longer are
Sometimes ductwork, sometimes capacity that is no longer there.
Financing and Rebates
A system rarely fails at a convenient moment. Approved applicants can spread the cost monthly. Raise it when you book and we will go over it alongside the quote.
One more thing worth saying plainly. A replacement quote should be a single number covering equipment, labor, removal, permit and startup. If a quote is missing any of those, it is not cheaper, it is incomplete, and the difference turns up later as a change order.
Install Day
We tell you what the day looks like before it happens. Roughly: the old system comes out, the new one goes in, the system is charged, started and commissioned, and the technician walks you through the thermostat and the filter before leaving.
What Happens to the Old System
It comes out and it leaves with us the same day. You are not left with a condenser sitting on the side of the house waiting for somebody to deal with it.
Refrigerant gets recovered properly rather than vented, which is both the law and the reason a licensed contractor costs more than a man with a truck. The equipment is disposed of through the proper channels and the pad, line set and electrical get inspected rather than simply reused because they happen to be there.
