What Your AC Is Doing, and What It Usually Means
Most calls we take fall into one of these. None of it replaces a diagnosis, but it tells you roughly what you are looking at before we arrive.
Running but blowing warm air
Low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen evaporator coil, or a failed compressor. The first two are common and fixable. The third is where the replacement conversation starts.
Outside unit completely silent
Usually a blown capacitor or a failed contactor. Both are small parts and often a same-visit fix. Sometimes it is just the breaker.
Nothing happens at all
Breaker, thermostat, float switch, or a control board. We start at the cheapest end and work up, not the other way around.
Ice on the lines or the coil
Airflow or charge. A filthy filter, a collapsed duct, or a refrigerant leak. We thaw it, then find why it iced, because thawing alone just delays the same call.
Water around the air handler
A clogged condensate drain, and in this humidity it is one of the most common calls we run. Quick to clear, expensive to ignore once it reaches drywall.
Short cycling, on and off every few minutes
Oversized system, low charge, a failing capacitor, or a thermostat reading the wrong temperature. Hard on the compressor either way.
Cooling fine downstairs, never upstairs
Usually ductwork or sizing rather than the unit. Worth a duct check before anybody quotes you a new system.
Loud grinding, squealing or a burning smell
Stop and shut it off at the breaker. A burning smell is a safety issue first and an AC repair second.
What an AC Repair Call Costs
We charge a diagnostic fee to come out and find the fault. Once we know what failed, you get one flat price for the repair before anything is touched, and the diagnostic fee comes off that total when you approve the work.
Nobody here bills by the hour. An hourly meter rewards a slow technician and charges you for a difficult fault. If the job runs longer than it looked, that is ours to absorb.

Repair or Replace
A dead system does not always mean a new one, and we will say so even though the replacement is the bigger ticket for us.
Three things decide it. Age, the refrigerant it runs on, and what the repair costs against a new install. Under about ten years old with a modest repair, fix it. Fifteen years old on R-22 with a failed compressor, and the refrigerant alone can cost more than the repair is worth. In between we quote both and let you pick with real numbers in front of you.
Ductwork Is Often the Real Problem
A correctly working system pushing air through leaking or undersized ducts still will not cool the back bedroom. Before anyone sells you a bigger unit, it is worth knowing whether the air is reaching the room at all.
What Happens When We Arrive
No mystery to it, and knowing the sequence makes the visit shorter.
The technician asks what the system has been doing and for how long, because the pattern narrows the fault faster than any gauge does. Then he tests: voltage at the unit, pressures on both sides, temperature split across the coil, airflow at the return. Those four readings identify most failures.
He shows you the reading that is out of spec rather than telling you a part is bad. Then you get the flat price, and nothing is touched until you approve it. Most common failures are fixed on that same visit because the parts that usually fail are the parts we carry.
Brands We Service
Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, American Standard, York, Amana, Bryant, Ruud and the rest. We do not care who installed the system and we do not refuse a repair because the brand came from somewhere else.
Parts availability differs by brand and age, and on older or discontinued equipment a part can take a few days to source. If that is where your system sits, we tell you up front rather than after we have taken it apart.
